Nicknamed the B.L.U.E. Sky Network, this network generates a constantly updating knowledge base which can be studied online at the forum. If you’d like to be part of this Intermod Series skywatch network click here to join. Members have unlimited access and are eligible to receive a free embroidered B.L.U.E. Sky Network patch. If you were on the mailing list (put together with the project host, WhiteWalls/Anthony Elms), you received the KC-135 Spotters’ Guide in the USPS mail. This introduction included an invitation to join the network and instructions on how to begin. Encouraged to join the growing online forum, network members add their input to the online database where other members comment and participate. Within a few weeks of the mailing, the Intermod Series invited the members to a one-time event/gathering which occurred at midnight on December 2nd, 2009 and ended permanently at 1:00 am. The Utility-intertied Signal Generation &amp; Transfer distributed an Extremely Low-Frequency signal into localized areas of the city. The transmission was achieved by using and altering the electromagnetic field surrounding the power line network. The signal was inaudible and relied on passive bio-reception. A special portable electronic unit was designed to plug into the grid and automatically pattern the pulse-wave signal, distributing it using the electrical network's alternating current. These Conditioning Units were concentrated into five local areas within the city. A website journal generated feedback to review and record reactions. Low Altitude Atmospheric &amp; Civic Modifications. In 2001, the Intermod Series launched rockets in the city which contained payloads designed to create micro-alterations of a city's near atmospheric environment. The LAACM had a monthly schedule with five different payloads which, when released into the air, propagated the designed effects determined by the use of therapeutics, noise and EMF screening, weather adjustment, and unusual optical events. The launch schedule was distributed over a 5-month period. Updates, locations, and cancellations were posted on the Launch Schedule Bulletin toll-free 800 phone number. Originally hosted by Temporary Services. A special Intermod mailer was created and sent out to the Temporary Services mailing list to announce the project. The mailer was inflated and contained an embroidered patch, an embossed paper description, and stickers. The AR is designed to be as small and lightweight as possible for maximum portability, and it can store several hundred unique CDs which can be played on the built-in CD player. Other audio sources such as a laptop can plug into the line input jack. A 4-watt transmitter is built into the unit for FM broadcasting. Average broadcast coverage is several city blocks. The Audio Relay runs on standard electricity. If that's not available, it's designed to use a car battery which, when it runs low, can be charged using the solar panels or by connecting the battery and plugging the unit into an electrical outlet. There are two Audio Relays. The original was built in 2002 and has been relayed to over a dozen locations. In 2007 it was loaned to Esteban Garcia and Radio Chiguiro in Lafayette, Indiana, for several years and is currently being used by Radius in Chicago. The second Audio Relay was built with a new Brennan McGaffey / Intermod Series design in 2005. This version traveled with 'Beyond Green, Toward a Sustainable Art' which originated at the Smart Museum and traveled as an iCI exhibit. The Audio Relay is a collaboration with Temporary Services. designed to be mood altering. There were four different audio tracks that related to commonly experienced emotions for the scheduled time of day. The audio was transmitted through the CB for a 5-minute duration at the scheduled time, creating a sedative or stimulating effect. There were no voice-overs or songs. The broadcast was amplified to 225 watts to increase the chance for short wave skip and reception over long distances. A container was designed and constructed to house the radio equipment and computer. An Intermod Series 3-piece tripod tower provides support for the antenna. Produced with Anthony Elms &amp; Whitewalls, Chicago. Sounds created with Ernst Karel. Sounds sampled below are recorded live from a receiving CB with no alterations. The receiver wire was strung thoughout the ESS director's apartment picking up the live power line buzz and fluctuations. Below is the description for the festival. Photos show the ELF receiver and the aluminum sticker which was distributed throughout Chicago. ........ For the festival I will be receiving and re-broadcasting the radio signal generated by the electrical power lines in and surrounding the ESS building. As electricity passes through these power lines a magnetic field is created. This magnetic field can be received as a radio signal using an ELF receiver. I will be broadcasting this radio signal over a more accessible FM frequency, 87.9 FM. This will be a live broadcast, 24 hrs. a day, November 5-22. A short interval signal will interrupt the transmission at the top of every hour. The area of reception will surround ESS by several miles. Sound MaskingSound masking is the use of one noise to prevent the audibility of another.Radio BroadcastConsidering that automobiles dominate a city’s acoustical environment, custom sound masking tracks have been created to match and blanket these tonal and noise levels. These tracks are being broadcast 24 hours a day over FM 89.5 for the month of June. The area of radio reception surrounds the TBA Exhibition Space by several miles in all directions.There are six different masking tracks, each one responding to common conditions encountered during the time of transmission. For example, early morning (2am-6am) is less dense and quieter than rush hour (6am-9am, 3pm-6pm). An interval signal will be broadcast at the beginning of every hour. In addition to this broadcast schedule, a special masking track for weather will be transmitted during rainstorms. A limited edition CD of this project is available. The Booth The transmitting equipment is stationed in the booth that is positioned in the gallery space. This booth has been designed to be lightweight, portable, and modular. It is a prototype for fiberglass construction, using one mold to cast all four sections.
